Before we correct homework, we need to update information in our text book and notebooks regarding the EU members that have adopted the Euro as official currency. To the 19 mentioned in our books, we need to add CROATIA, who joined the eurozone on 1st January this year.


Next, we correct homework.

We remember some of the concepts we learned in Unit 2 about Europe as a continent . We go back in our notebooks and identify the countries that are currently members os the EU.


We have a look at the pictures on pages 102 and 103. We read the captions and do activity 1 orally.

Then we do activities 2 and 3 in the notebook.

If we have tiiem, we look at he blank physical map on the board and try to remember the main mountain ranges we learned.

Or we can watch this other video. An Indian student is presenting Europe's relief. It's longer, but worth watching. You may like doing something similar.

Today we study Europe's relief. We go to pages 28 and 29. 



We can play guessing games saying the countries were the different mountain ranges are located, and their capital cities.

We use the big physical map in class or this blank map.

We start by checking the maps and the list of countries and capitals in your notebooks.

Next we do three sets of PLICKERS.

We read some of the riddles you have written. We can make four teams and you take turns in reading and guessing the countries.

PHYSICAL MAP

We hand out translucent paper and a blank physical map of Europe. Next, we start drawing a physical map of Europe. Retrace it with a fine marker or a black pen. Colour it as the model on page 28. Dont´t forget to include the colour Key you can see in your book on page 28. remember the meaning of the different colours in a physical map.

Don't forget to label oceans and seas. DO NOT WRITE the names of the MOUNTAIN RANGES yet.

After that, we finish the political map of Europe. We colour yellow the countries that do not belong to the EU, and for the EU members we use different colours. We label the seas and oceans correctly: Atlantic Ocean, Caspian Sea, Arctic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea. 

We can use the information and colours  from this map:

Although it is not included in the chapter, we are making a table of the European countries that are members of the European Union, with their capital cities. We pay a special attention to those that share a common currency (EURO).

We hand out his table and attach it to our notebook.

After we have studied the 27 European countries that are members of the European Union, there are other countries we need to learn. Seven European countries are currently candidates to enter the EU or they are potential candidates. 


In this table you can see all the European countries and their capitals.




The number of countries in Europe is in constant change. In the table provided above there are 50 countries. Some people do not consider Turkey or Russia as part of Europe because they also have territories in Asia. In other cases, like Kosovo, some countries do not recognize its independence from Serbia.

The rest of the lesson we are going to write riddles about European countries

 I am thinking of a country which has borders with Hungary, Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria and Slovenia. Its capital city begins with B.  (Slovakia, capital Bratislava) 


HOMEWORK (For Monday 17th) 

Finish the political map. It must be glued to your notebook.

Copy the list with all the countries (black) and their capitals (blue).
 Highlight in blue the 27 countries that belong to the EU

Write three riddles like the ones you heard in activity 3.

We make sure everyone understands the concept of time zones in Europe. We use some examples.
